Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE) staff members volunteered at DC Central Kitchen (DCCK) on Aug. 29. Hosted by MSE Foundation, this service project allowed staff members to work alongside DCCK culinary job training graduates in the organization’s morning and afternoon Meal Prep programs.
Both groups learned about the history, mission and impact of DCCK before starting their shifts. During the morning program, MSE staff chopped vegetables, mixed salad and prepared barbeque ribs, while the afternoon program chopped vegetables and marinated tuna steaks for several dishes. These healthy ingredients were used to make meals that DCCK distributes to its partner agencies. The Meal Prep program utilizes volunteers to make 5,000 meals daily which are delivered to nearby homeless shelters, transitional homes, schools and nonprofit organizations.
MSE Foundation offers opportunities throughout the year for MSE staff to give back to the community. During the summer of 2017 MSE partnered with the Anacostia Watershed Society for a project at
Bladensburg Waterfront Park
and Catholic Charities’
Cup of Joe program
for a project at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. One of Monumental Sports & Entertainment’s core values is the double-bottom line that engages, unifies and gives back to the community the organization serves on a daily basis.
DC Central Kitchen
DC Central Kitchen is a nonprofit developer of innovative social ventures that break the cycle of hunger and poverty. Founded in 1989 in protest of traditional charity models, the organization uses career training, job creation and sustainable business practices to strengthen local food systems and reduce disparities in health and economic opportunity. The Kitchen's life-changing social ventures include providing culinary job training to at-risk adults, turning wasted food into balanced meals for shelters and nonprofits, and serving healthy, scratch-cooked meals in low-income schools. These efforts have been recognized with the leading national award for healthy school food innovation, The Golden Carrot; the Washington Business Journal's Green Business Award for Innovation; and the DC Chamber of Commerce's Community Impact Award.
